David Bruce
I undertook PhD research in the
Engineering Department at GU into the properties of metals at high
temperatures. The results were of considerable interest to the Iron and
Steel Institute who awarded me a prize. I however determined that
laboratory research was not for me.
In 1966 I joined the Operational
Research Group of the National Coal Board based in Middlesex. I enjoyed
building the mathematical models and travelling to the production units but
did not enjoy life in London.
In 1968 I joined the OR group of Rolls
Royce in Glasgow. I rose to become head of the Group but the liquidation of
the company in 1971 resulted in the company adopting austerity measures
which made prospects limited.
In late 1971 I joined the statistics
unit of the Scottish Office in Edinburgh. I was responsible sucessively for
Home, Local Government, Economic and Education Statistics. In 1991 I became
an administrator of Social Work and Community Care in particular. In 2001 I
retired.
I live in Longniddry and have 3 children
now aged 42, 40 and 31. The older 2 are married and I have 5 grand children
aged 11, 9, 6, 4 and 3. Of these 3 are in Livingston and 2 are near Los
Angeles. I enjoy the outdoors, garden, walk and play golf. I am
responsible for supervising the upkeep of the extensive open areas in our
estate. I am a member of the local Rotary and Probus Clubs.
