Joseph A. McGeough
Following
graduation in 1963 I joined the Department of Mechanical Engineering at
the University of Glasgow for PhD studies. I worked on Electrochemical
Machining (ECM), a method of shaping very hard alloy metals by high
current density electrolysis. These studies were completed at
Leicester University, with graduation in 1967, followed by an enjoyable
postdoctoral appointment at the University of Queensland, Australia.
After return to the UK, I obtained industrial experience at
International Research and Development Co. Ltd., Newcastle upon Tyne.
My wife Brenda and I
met while I was working there. Later I returned to university service,
firstly holding a Senior Research appointment at Strathclyde then becoming a
Lecturer, Senior Lecturer and Reader in Engineering at Aberdeen University.
In 1983 I was appointed
Regius Professor of Engineering at Edinburgh University.
I have published more
than 200 papers mainly in Proceedings of the Royal Society and of the
Institution of Mechanical Engineers. Books include Principles of
Electrochemical Machining (1974), Advanced Methods of Machining (1988),
Micromachining of Engineering Materials (Editor) (2001) and 'The Engineering
of Human Joint Replacements' (2013).
I am a Fellow of the
Institution of Mechanical Engineers, and of the Royal Society of Edinburgh
and The Royal Academy of Engineering.
Brenda and I have three
children : two boys and one daughter who are all married. We have four
grandchildren.
When younger, I had a variety of interests, including sport. As a student
at Glasgow I served as President of the GU Astronomy Society. I also
competed in Athletics for the University and was Secretary and Vice
President of the Athletics section. We won a series of National and
University athletic championships : sprint and medley relays, and I was
awarded "Colours".
I like to make a contribution to the ‘Community’ and was Chair of the
Aberdeen Dyce College Council, and Edinburgh Colinton Literary Society (2009
- 2012).
